about

Wurli's debut album looks back at music of the last 4 centuries, updating it with a post-modern sensibility. The pas de deux from the ballet Les Sylphides was the spark for this project. He was asked to adapt the music for a dance featuring one performer interacting with a video projection of herself. A recent collector of vintage keyboards, he was intrigued by the juxtaposition of children's instruments (electric chord organ, toy piano) with woodwinds (recorders, saxophones, clarinets). The warm, nostalgic sound gives the music a patina that evokes the aural landscape of the '60s and '70s without sounding dated.

The works by contemporary composers (Eddie Rubeiz and Douglas Laustsen) demonstrate the diversity of contemporary Classical music. Rubeiz's music is a modern take on hymn tunes and Renaissance polyphony, while Laustsen's work for toy piano and tape uses found sounds to explore the feeling of a cloud that passes over a sunny summer day.
